After the great fall/summer wheater last weekend, this time we were driving through the beginning winter including snowfall. Strange sight: all the trees with bright fall colors and snow on them...
At the venue it was around 0 degree and 5-10cm of snow, which made for a special forest to run through (nice actually), but also was freezing cold as we're not yet used to it.
Anyway, nice competion, nice course and OK map - had lots of problems with reading vegetation, but rest was OK and this could have been partly because of the snow.
Orienteering was OK most of the time, running was hard at the beginning, very good in the middle and then hit the wall about a km before the finish - after that moving was a struggle...
Details:
4) Control was a lot further right than I was expecting it after following a spur in the snow. Thought I wasn't orienteering properly then, but after hearing that lots of people had the same problem and trying to make my GPS route fit the paths I definetly ran on I'm not sure anymore. Seems like the control was possibly wrong.
1 min. lost
10) Big mistake of the day: Came the wrong path (or at least another one than I thought) and searched for the control on the wrong place, not realizing the very distinctive re-entrant I was searching in and out of. 3:30 lost
12) Came a bit too far left. 30s?
15) Too insecure in the approach, didn't see that I just could go over the hill and then ran right and hit the control, so was going slower than I could have. 30s?
16) Expecting the control a bit too early. 45s
Total mistakes: 6:15 min.
