OO-Cup Slovenia, Stage 1, W21A long, 5,3km +200m climb, around 30 degrees and sunny.
Had a great start into the competion orienteeringwise, felt good and in control for most of the course and the controls just appeared where I expected them - great feeling for the first day in this kind of terrain :) Only small insecurities and sometimes too much retrospective and not enough prospective orienteering - until the second last control where I made the only bigger mistake of the day cause I just couldn't see any route with a good attackpoint.
Runningwise I was slow in the terrain cause I just can't really move in this kind of stony terrain. Running on paths when possible was OK, but I suffered a bit from the heat.
Details:
1) Started slow, but secure. Spiked
2) Maybe a bit slow in figuring out the details in the thicket. 10-15s?
8) Easily found and secure, but maybe could have been a bit faster with taking the paths around the hill in the middle. Was too afraid of not seeing the path because they sometimes were very indistinct and took the secure option along the depressions and the cliff, which of course was less runable. 30s?
11) For once took the path route and it paid of - my best split place of the race and that on a long leg ;)#
12) No orienteering mistake, but started to get tired and dehydrated (no drinking point yet) and stumbled quite badly along the hillside on the last part to the control.
13) Big mistake of the day. Knew that the control could be tricky, but didn't see any route with a good attackpoint unfortunately. Plan was to leave the paths were a did, then get nearly to the top of the hill, try the hit the path on the contour and then the control. In reality I was far too far down but never realized it. Route doesn't look to bad on the quickroute (apart from the extra circle), but truth was that I had never any idea were I really was and thought I hit the right path on the contour :( Finally figured it out the second time I came back to the path up the hill and thought about what the depressions a liitle bit further down the path meant - after realizing where I really was it was easy. Better route would have been either aiming for staying as low as I stayed (and just know where I am) and then go up the path or even take some paths further to the right and along the depression on the foot of the hill... 5:15 lost
Total mistakes: 5:15 to 6 min; 5,55%,
< 1min mistake/km; 20./24.- still a good race, but the second last control costed me 4 places.
